Why Mom’s Don’t Like XP
This page started with an interesting interaction between Scott and some of his students while he was doing a seminar on Refactoring, Design Patterns and XP.
After discussing some of the advantages of the “Ya ain’t gonna need it” approach one of his students said “So our mothers were wrong - we shouldn’t do something today we can put off ’till tomorrow.”
Mom said: Look before you leap.
Martin Fowler says: Leap first, then refactor.
Mom said: To err is human, to forgive divine.
Kent Beck says: Write your tests first. actually, this sounds like something Mom would say
Mom said: Plan ahead.
Kent Beck says: Do the simplest thing that works.
Mom said: Measure twice, cut once.
Martin Fowler says: Test, code, test.
Mom said: Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today.
Kent Beck says: You ain’t gonna need it.
Mom said: A stitch in time saves nine.
Bob Martin says: frameworks are wasteful.
Mom said: Don’t play with your food
Martin Fowler says: Play with your code
Mom said: You’ll catch your death of cold.
Kent Beck says: Don’t worry about bugs, your tests will get them.
Mom said: Don’t pick that up, you don’t know where it’s been.
Nobody comments their code, so how can I possibly know where it’s been?
Mom said: Be polite.
Kent Beck says: Tell the truth
Mom said: Stop tracking mud over my nice clean floor
Martin Fowler says: Don’t worry about messing up your code, you can refactor it
Mom said: You don’t appreciate things unless you work hard for them.
Kent Beck says: Coding should be fun.
Mom said: Don’t talk to strangers.
Hey, if I couldn’t talk to strange people in my development group I’d have to pair with the cleaning lady.
Mom said: Because I said so, that’s why.
Kent Beck says: Well, come to think of it, that’s what Beck says too…
